The principle

Your words are yours. Caspr has no server: there is nowhere on our side to send a recording or a text to. What leaves your Mac, and where it goes, depends on the dictation path you choose — and you can switch at any time.

1. The macOS path: nothing leaves the machine

When you dictate through macOS:

  • The microphone stream is processed in your Mac's memory.
  • macOS speech recognition — Apple Intelligence, or system Dictation — runs on your machine, offline.
  • No byte of audio is sent over the internet.

2. The ChatGPT path: your account, at OpenAI

When you dictate through ChatGPT:

  • Caspr opens the chatgpt.com website in a web page built into the app, signed in to your own ChatGPT account. That page is what captures the microphone.
  • Your voice is sent to OpenAI, which transcribes it — exactly as if you used chatgpt.com in a browser. Text a module sends to ChatGPT, to reorganise it or to ask a question, is sent too, and those conversations appear in your ChatGPT history.
  • That processing falls under OpenAI's privacy policy and your account settings, not Caspr's. Caspr receives no copy of it on a server: it has none.
  • The session — cookies and page storage — stays on your Mac, in the space macOS reserves for the app. "Se déconnecter" in the settings, and the uninstaller, erase it.

3. No telemetry, no tracking

The app:

  • requires no Caspr account;
  • includes no analytics, advertising tracker or third-party SDK;
  • makes a single network request of its own: the update check against GitHub. The automatic check is off by default; "Vérifier maintenant" runs it on demand, and installing an update downloads the disk image from GitHub.

4. What stays on your Mac

Your settings and the history of recent transcriptions are kept in the app's preferences; the notes file, if you choose one, is yours. None of it is uploaded, whichever path you use. Versions before 0.15 offered local collection of dictations: it no longer exists, and its files are moved to the Trash when the new version first launches.

5. This site

This site uses no analytics cookie, no tracker and no remote font. It queries GitHub's public interface to display the latest published version number.
